If you have ever dreamt about working for one of the fastest-growing U.S. technology firms, then you are not alone.  Information Technology (IT) jobs at companies like Facebook, Apple, Google or Microsoft are on a short list of dream jobs for most IT professionals.  But what does it take to get into these companies?  Are they really still hiring?  The answer is it takes specific marketable skills and yes, they are still hiring.  In fact, most of these companies are actually facing a shortage of qualified candidates for some of their more specialized Information Technology (IT) jobs.

Don’t let the size of the unemployed population in the country fool you; there may be more than 15 million Americans out of work, but few of them possess the highly specialized IT skills needed for the top jobs in Silicon Valley.  According to a recent article published by GTN Technical Staffing, “How Do You Land the Best Information Technology (IT) Jobs?,” this shortage is felt most acutely in companies whose positions cannot be automated.  These jobs include mobile app developers, systems engineers, software developers and database administrators, but they extend to include market research and creative development positions that help companies remain competitive.  One thing is common to all of these available jobs – they require a heightened level of insight about the ever-changing IT landscape.

While some of these positions are temporarily filled through outsourcing, employers are looking for long-term employees who can make a commitment to the company. As a result, the top priority for filling Information Technology (IT) jobs is with highly skilled and intelligent candidates.

According to a recent article posted by Marketwatch on CareerBuilder, one out of every four young IT professionals would consider a job at Google their “dream job.”  However, only one out of every 250 applicants ends up landing a gig at this technology giant.  But don’t let this statistic get you down; the pay rate for top IT jobs is fairly high throughout the country.  You would earn a lot more in Silicon Valley, but the cost of living is a lot higher there too.  The best paying markets for Information Technology (IT) jobs are in LA, San Diego, New York and Boston, but major Texas cities are not far behind.
