general_aviation_directoryWhen planning a trip into Arizona, Colorado general aviation pilots rarely look for “international airports”, as these are rarely designed to serve the needs of transient GA pilots.  But the general aviation directory I found on the TIA (Tucson International Airport) web site seems to contradict this logic.  According to the web site, more than 60 percent of the airport’s day-to-day operations are geared toward general aviation and the needs of non-commercial aircraft and pilots.  Interestingly, this trend seems to be taking hold at other international airports serving smaller metropolitan areas.  It’s not yet clear whether this will have an impact on smaller airfields throughout the Southwest, which sustain themselves entirely on general aviation.

What are some of the reasons why this general aviation directory recommends flying into Tucson International?

First of all, if you need the flexibility of taking off and landing at odd hours of the night, Tucson International has an FAA-operated control tower that stays open 24/7.  Need to refuel or relax in between flights?  The FBO at the Executive Terminal is also open around the clock because it serves as a United States Port of Entry, so this terminal remains open to pilots and passengers.  A transient pilot will find everything he or she needs here, from weather services to fuel, a comfortable lounge area for pilots and even a business center.

Looking at the general aviation directory for Tucson International, the amenities don’t stop there.  They also offer a GPU power cart, 350 airport tie-down spots or covered parking for up to seven aircraft, plus meeting rooms and a catering service.  Business travels who land at TIA find it easy to get around because the airport offers free shuttles and rental car agencies.  For short stopovers, free WiFi and a large-screen HDTV in the spacious lobby area can keep passengers occupied and comfortable for hours.

Travelers with an interest in the arts and culture will have another reason to visit Tucson International.  In addition to all of their 24-hour services for GA pilots, the airport recently opened an art gallery.  For the inaugural show, which opened in early April 2011, the gallery featured the artwork of airport traffic officer Tom Burton, and they expect to rotate shows in the gallery regularly to show the work of talented local artists.

A general aviation directory like this one will help you find the services you need for your trip to Tucson Arizona.  Check The Airport Authority regularly for news and updates.
